Can You Spot the Animal?

Going on a game drive is like playing Where’s Waldo with a wildlife theme. Many of Africa’s animals use camouflage to blend in with their surroundings. Predators use “cryptic coloration” (aka camouflage) to become invisible when on the hunt and prey animals use camouflage to blend in with their surroundings to hide from attackers. Some animals wear the cloak of invisibility most of the time, others use it when there is an advantage, like sneaking up on prey.

I’ve improved my scouting skills over the years, but I’m still a long way from the eagle eyes of my Maasai guides. Sometimes my eyes hurt looking for the animal my guide seems to spot with ease.

Can you spot the animals in these images? Some are easier to see than others, all are well matched for their natural habitat. I’ll post the images this week and tell you who is hiding next week. Keep track of how many animals you see in each picture. Feel free to post your answers in the comment section too.

If you know a child who would have some fun learning to look for animals I hope you will share this story!
