Wildlife is a saviour. Majete was dead, now it is alive, and the future is bright. African Parks Report 2023

At a time when despair and global crises dominate headlines here’s an inspiring success story. Twenty years ago, there was no wildlife in Malawi’s Majete Wildlife Reserve. The animal population was decimated during the late 1970’s and 1980’s due to poaching and other human activities. The land was completely degraded. “Majete was dead.” A group of committed conservationists from African Parks and local community leaders believed the reserve could be restored. They started at ground zero. There was no infrastructure, no wildlife, no tourists.

Under the stewardship of African Parks and the support of the Malawi government 599 animals were introduced to the reserve in 2003. Now 20 years later Majete is a world class safari destination with a wildlife population of 22,000 animals that support the local people.

It took a dream, unwavering commitment, ethical leadership, and authentic, honest, and real relationships with the locals to restore the park and build a sustainable economy that supports a healthy ecosystem and the people.

Be inspired with this 9 min. video celebrating 20 years of success and transformation in Majete. People can turn things around when they care, when they collaborate, when they listen to those on the ground.

Today visitors to Majete witness a healthy ecosystem teeming with thriving animal populations and plentiful birdlife. It is Malawi’s premier Big Five destination. All funds generated in Majete contribute to the management of the reserve. Majete is also giving back by supporting the translocation of wildlife to reintroduce animals to other areas on the continent where they have been extinguished.

Majete’s residents are proud to support their wildlife. Thanks to the wildlife local people now have schools, healthcare and viable employment. It took time. It took leadership and integrity. It is possible.

When We Take Care of Nature, Nature Takes Care of Us.
