Nature's Best Photography Winners

What we have treasured over the years is the immediate and long-lasting affect a single image or film instills in the hearts and minds of children, adults, and families alike, inspiring discussions, imaginative perspectives, and most importantly, a greater understanding and appreciation of nature overall.

I was delighted to receive an Award Certificate and a copy of Nature’s Best latest magazine in the mail when I returned home from my African safari. My image of two tussling adolescent bull elephants is a Highly Honored Winner in the Animal Antics category. View the full gallery of Nature’s Best winners here.

My winning image was taken close to Mahali Mizuri, one of my favourite lodges in the Olare Motorogi Conservancy adjacent to the Maasai Mara. We stayed there again last month and often passed the spot where we came across a herd of elephants in January 2020.

The story behind the shot:

I laughed out loud watching this pair of adolescent bull elephants tussle with each other like a pair of rambunctious boys on the playground. When one bull had enough, he sat down on his haunches in an act of defiance. His friend would have none of it! Determined to continue the match, he pushed his pal back on his feet. Elephants are extraordinary animals, capable of a full range of emotions. The sense of joy and silliness in this pair was contagious. I smile every time I see this image.
