Maasai Mara Lions
The Maasai Mara is one of the best places in the world to observe Africa’s iconic wildlife. I have been on dozens of game drives over the past decade and never tire of the wonder of being so close to these animals in the wild. I spent hours as a child reading and rereading Joy Adamson’s Born Free. I was entranced by the story of her life with lions, dreaming about what it would be like to actually live in proximity to African wildlife.
The King of the Beasts, a global symbol of power, strength and courage, is in decline. Lions have disappeared from 80% of their historical range: that’s between 27–33 countries that they formerly inhabited. They are now officially classified as “vulnerable". Habitat loss, human wildlife conflict, poaching, and hunting pose significant threats.
Sustainable and responsible tourism helps support conservation and the communities that live in close relationship with these big cats. I hope my images help raise awareness about the beauty of these animals and the importance of protecting lions, essential predators in African ecosystems.
