The story behind the shot:
On the recommendation of my photographer friend and travelling companion, Heather and I booked 4 nights at Mara West Lodge that sits 400 m above the Mara Triangle in the Great Rift Valley. Our morning game drives began before the sun rose so we could witness sunrise from our lofty viewpoint.
The Maasai Mara National Reserve ranges from 1,480 to 2,2280 above sea level. Mornings are cool due to the high altitude. Last January was particularly cool, with predawn temperatures 8 – 10 C. As a Canadian, I’m happy with cooler weather. We dressed in layers and peeled off fleeces and scarfs as the day warmed up.
The morning I made this image layers of mist settled in the river valley below us. Bands of trees along creek and riverbanks added interesting wavy contour lines in silhouette. A hot air balloon rose in tandem with the sun adding movement and interest to the overall setting. It was a magical beginning to another great day on safari.
