Sunrise Over the Mara

Writing this blog is a solitary affair, correspondence from readers makes my day. My love of elephants is self evident. I’ve been called “the elephant woman” in more than one circle at home and in Kenya. As a result, thanks to readers, I often receive interesting stories about elephants.

Recently friends from Australia, USA and Canada each sent a link to the video of the elephants in the San Diego Zoo responding to a 5.2 magnitude earthquake on April 14th. I really appreciated readers wanted to make sure I saw the clip of how the adult elephants quickly gathered around the youngsters in the group forming a protective “alert circle”. It was synchronistic that the story followed my Love and Resilience story of witnessing similar behaviour in the wild in January.

Elephant family bonds are strong. It was heartening to see that even in captivity their instinct to protect the young and vulnerable against any perceived threat remains intact. I think we could all benefit trusting we have an “alert circle” don’t you?

This week we celebrate Earth Day. I invite you to be an “alert circle” for your part of the world. Watch for threats to habitat and the flora and fauna you co-exist with. Don’t be afraid to speak up when you see a threat to the ecosystem around you. Celebrate progress, share your stories, watch and learn from nature. When we take care of nature, nature takes care of us.

 Happy Earth Day!

Love and healing go both ways.
