Earth Day
The Earth is what we all have in common. — Wendell Berry
Happy Earth Day! I broke my Wednesday blog streak to post today in honour of Earth Day. I’d love to hear how you celebrate. When we lived in the country, we planted a tree each year to mark Earth Day. Our earth friendly actions impact nature, whether it’s planting insect and bird friendly perennials in the garden or making conscious choices at the grocery store, collectively our actions make a difference.
I received a thoughtful testimonial this week for my book from advance reader Katie Rowe, co-founder of the Reteti Elephant Sanctuary in Northern Kenya.
Thank you for bringing to life the importance of elephants and their crucial complex role they play for a healthy environment. The senselessness of poaching is one thing but us as humanity we have contributed to the changing climate and allowed the degradation of the landscape they (and we) live on. Elephants and indigenous communities are unfairly on the front line of the harsh reality of climate change and we need to change our behaviour to see a healthy balance return for people and wildlife to co-exist. We are all deeply connected, we can all do something that truly matters.. where will we go for our spiritual quest and reflection and healing when nature no longer exists.
Katie asks a powerful question: Where will we go for our spiritual quest and reflection and healing when nature no longer exists? Research affirms what most of us already know – being in nature is healing. Trees provide clean air AND comfort. Open spaces and clean air are an antidote to stress.
In the past few decades 60% of the world’s wilderness has been degraded or lost to development. There is no Planet B. Let’s do all we can to protect nature and nature will take care of us.
Along with celebrating Earth Day/Month I’m celebrating this message from Kevin Lanuke at Blitzprint this week: Congratulations Kathy. Your book is now in production! I read the final, final draft, uploaded the file and said PRINT! Now we know how much the book weighs we’ve added the shipping cost to the special discount pre-order link. Books ordered now should be shipped to you next month!
These Grevy zebras are crowding around to see the first copy.
And these young orphans from the David Sheldrick Elephant Orphanage are racing home for their copies. They know $10 from every sale goes to elephant conservation in Kenya.
This little orphan at Reteti in Northern Kenya is waiting patiently for me to bring a copy of the book to her community in June.
