The Sound of Safari
The roar of a lion is not without reason. African Proverb

Today’s post is in audio. Seeing a lion in the wild galvanizes attention. Hearing a lion triggers a primal nerve. Did you know a lion’s roar can travel up to five miles (about 8 kilometers) across the savannah? As dusk settled over the grasslands, this lion roared his authority over his territory, warning predators and prey that he was the King. Have a listen.

Sound tells stories in the wild. We had to investigate the wailing of hyenas as we headed back to the lodge one evening. What was going on? Ever the opportunists, a pride of lions heard hyenas take down a wildebeest. The lions moved in and gate crashed the feast. Complaints hold no power in the story of survival. The hyenas yowled their objection to no avail. The lions took over and dove right in – literally. Listen to their dinner conversation here.

Africa comes with its own symphony. I love snuggling down in bed on safari, my feet tucked around a hot water bottle under the blankets, my tent zipped up tight. And, if I’m lucky, drifting off to sleep to the serenade of a lion proclaiming his dominance in the darkness.

Happy Thanksgiving to my American readers! Does anyone’s dinner table conversation sound like the lions’? 😁
