Dreams are tiny seeds from which beautiful tomorrows grow. Sierra Leonean Proverb

As I track the gradual increase of daylight over the winter landscape here in Ontario, I find myself leaning towards the new year, enjoying the quiet of the season, yet aware of a growing sense anticipation. Next month I’m heading out on safari again. Every time I leave Kenya, I wonder if, or when, I will return. I live my life as if a reunion is assured and tilt my view towards the next adventure on African soil. I consider hope a daily nutrient.

I never know what or who will show up when on safari. One thing I am confident of, however, is that if I’m open to outcome, not attached to outcome, something will fill my sense of wonder and stretch my heartstrings. Trusting in the good and beautiful brings rewards.

As we welcome in a new year, Sue Heatherington’s poem This Time feels like a wonderful invitation.

THIS TIME

Pause,
see with fresh eyes,
understand where
you are.

Put on
your own name
and cross this
threshold.

For this
time is now
waiting for
you.

I’m taking a short sabbatical for the month of January. I will be back here in February with new stories. If I show up sooner consider it a bonus! Finally, since elephants uncanny communicators over long distances, I’m adding Craig’s photo here and sending him a message that I’m available for a meet up any time Jan. 23 – 26.

To top up the 2026 cup of anticipation here’s a short clip (26 sec.) of an elephant family we met on the road in Mara West last year. Turn up your volume to hear the elephants rumble their greeting (warning?).

Best wishes for a new year filled with many blessings. Each of us can make a difference, be kind, share your light, let’s take care of each other and our precious planet.
